First large snowstorm of season to hit Pittsburgh

• Forecasters predict 3-5 inches of snow.

Zoom in: Snow is expected to start falling early Tuesday morning, just after midnight, and mostly fall between 4am-8am on Tuesday.

• Lingering showers could continue into late morning and early afternoon.

State of play: The morning commute will be impacted, said the weather service on X.

• Allegheny County will deploy 20 salt trucks installed with plows, and will add more if needed during Tuesday's morning rush hour.
• Local municipalities and PennDOT will also deploy plows to clear the roads.

What they're saying: Drivers should leave earlier than usual for their morning commutes, said Allegheny County public works director Stephen Shanley.

• "We also encourage drivers to slow down, leave extra space between their vehicle and the one in front of them, and stay six car lengths behind our salt trucks," he said.

Between the lines: More snow is expected in the northern and western parts of the region and less accumulation in the south and east, according to the weather service.

• The Mon Valley is forecast to get just 1-2 inches, and possibly a wintry mix instead of pure snow.
• In the Laurel Highlands, snow might change over to freezing rain, possibly causing roads to ice over.
