Parkway East stretch ranked among riskiest in U.S.

Allstate named a section of the Parkway East as one of the riskiest roads in America.

Why it matters: Interstate 376 east of Downtown, aka Parkway East, has caused drivers headaches for generations with tunnel traffic and scores of crashes, and now a major insurance provider is validating their grievances.

By the numbers: The short stretch of outbound Parkway East before the Squirrel Hill tunnel was ranked as the fifth riskiest in the country by Allstate.

The riskiest is a stretch of Interstate 8 East in San Diego.

The fine print: Allstate ranked the roads based on 2024 data of rates of hard braking (decelerating 8 or more mph within one second) and speeding 15 mph over the posted limit.

Pro tip: The safest time to drive that section of Parkway East is Sunday through Thursday between 7pm-11pm, according to Allstate.

The riskiest time each day starts at 11pm or midnight.

What's next: PennDOT has submitted redesign plans to improve safety and driving east for that section of Parkway East, with construction slated for sometime in 2029.
