Walmart seeks grant to demolish Monroeville Mall

Catch up quick: Walmart bought the 186-acre property in February for roughly $34 million, with plans for a mixed-use retail, commercial and entertainment destination.

• It tapped Texas-based real estate firm Cypress Equities to lead the effort and also snapped up nearby parcels, including the Dick's Sporting Goods and Best Buy sites.
• Since then, Walmart has revealed little about its redevelopment plans. The company in a statement said it had no additional information to share.

The intrigue: The 1969 landmark mall was made famous by George Romero's film "Dawn of the Dead," drawing thousands each year for Living Dead Weekend and home to the Living Dead Museum. Fans lamented the news online.

What's next: Redevelopment plans must be approved by the Monroeville Planning Commission and council before the project can move forward.
