Pittsburgh wants to ban vape shops near schools, parks

What they're saying: "I can walk down a city block and see at least three vape shops selling the same unregulated products. On top of that, the lights are so bright, it looks like a circus; no wonder our youth congregate in these spaces," said Councilmember Bobby Wilson (D-North Side), who introduced the bill.

What's inside: The location restrictions would apply to new vape shops, not existing shops.

• The bill would bar vape shops from operating between 11pm-9am.
• Vapes, e-cigarettes, smoking-related accessories, CBD products and products derived from hemp like Delta-8 must be kept in locked display cases.

Between the lines: Tobacco use has been declining dramatically among teens, but a recent study of American, Canadian and English youth suggests vaping is giving kids the same level of nicotine exposure.

Zoom in: Councilmembers Daniel Lavelle, Erika Strassburger and Bob Charland have co-sponsored the legislation.

What's next: The bill will be presented to the Committee on Land Use and Economic Development next week.
