Fall is peak apple picking season, and the Pittsburgh region has plenty of spots to bag a bushel.
The big picture: The Keystone State is the nation's fourth-largest apple producer, expected to harvest more than 10 million bushels this year, per the U.S. Apple Association.
Pro tip: When visiting orchards, choose apples that are firm and heavy and have smooth, unblemished skin. Avoid any with soft spots, dark patches or rough, scabby areas near the stem, per Penn State Extension.
How it works: Most orchards require you to buy a bag before picking. Some farms are cash-only, and many share schedule updates on their websites or social media.
