Ice cream season is here!
Why it matters: Yes, you can (and should) eat ice cream all year-round in Pittsburgh, but the summer months mean the seasonal ice cream stands are open, and people deserve to know which to visit.
Here are our favorite seasonal ice cream shops.
Page's Dairy Mart, South Side
Pro tip: Page's draws a crowd — the line often wraps around the building — for a reason. Don't let it stop you; it moves faster than you expect!
Antney's Ice Cream, Westwood
Pro tip: Don't be afraid to try one of their unconventional flavors of hard ice cream. I had a red wine ice cream there once that is one of my all-time favorites.
Twisters Soft Serve Ice Cream, Bloomfield
Pro tip: Mix your ice cream with candy in a flurry or add in some Italian ice for a decadent treat. The Italian ice twister is pretty large, so opt for a slush puppy float if you want something smaller.
Glen's Custard, Springdale and Lower Burrell
Pro tip: Old-fashioned frozen custard is just as rich as hard ice cream, but a bit softer. The Springdale location has a mini golf course!
Kool Cones, McCandless
Pro tip: Its two locations (one on Perry Highway and other just outside North Park) added fruit-flavored soft serve called Dole Whip this year, like at Disney World but more flavors.
💠Ryan's thought bubble: I love venturing up to Beaver County for the unique soft-serve flavors at Punk's Ice Cream Shoppe in Baden, but the roadside stand has yet to open this summer.
If you go: These seasonal ice cream shops close down for the year sometime in fall, usually between September and November.
