A Brookline couple is turning their wedding reception into a love letter to Pittsburgh's music scene — throwing a public concert with a lineup of their favorite local bands.
Why it matters: As wedding costs rise, the duo is ditching the traditional playbook and putting their money toward the bands that shaped their story, a shift that could resonate with others looking to keep celebrations more meaningful and rooted in place.
Driving the news: Bev Hogan and Phran Batson are throwing a free public concert on Friday at Bottlerocket Social Hall to celebrate their wedding with Pittsburgh bands M.E.L.T., f*ck yeah, dinosaurs!, and Heading North. Everyone's invited, but tickets are limited.
How it works: After a private ceremony and dinner nearby with family and friends, the party will head to Bottlerocket for "the first show of the rest of their lives," with dozens of free tickets still up for grabs.
- Guests can buy drinks at the bar like any regular show; there's no dress code, but expect concert vibes.
- The night will still have wedding touches, including treats from the Pittsburgh cookie table, custom wedding merch and on-site wedding photos.
- All ages are welcome.
- Couples can expect to spend around $5,000 to book Bottlerocket for a similar event, per the venue, but prices vary based on accommodations.
What they're saying: "We don't want to gatekeep the local music scene," says Hogan.
- "We like to be involved with people and in places that are accepting and diverse. We just started showing up to local shows one day and fell in love with it, so it's important to us to support the community and the musicians that welcomed us."
Catch up quick: When the pair — a high school teacher and a small business owner — met during the quiet days of COVID lockdown, they quickly bonded over a shared love of Pittsburgh's music scene, particularly the fuzz rock trio M.E.L.T.
- What started with sweaty sets at venues like Spirit and Brillobox grew into a full-blown fandom, with the duo traveling to more than 40 shows across multiple states.
The big picture: The reception reflects their broader aim: to make the wedding feel authentically Pittsburgh, they said.
- "We love where we live and what we do," says Hogan. "We want to give back and support the places we love."
