Yinzers start things early — rush hour at 4pm and dinner before 7pm — so finding good food late is not always easy.
Why it matters: Pittsburgh nightlife tends to end earlier than other, bigger cities — a characteristic that has only worsened since the pandemic — but there are still some delicious options if you know where to look.
Zoom in: Here are some of the best joints serving satisfying meals after 11pm, and some into the wee hours of the morning.
Cambod-Ican Kitchen, South Side: Open until 3am on Friday and Saturday, and 2am the rest of the week (except closed Monday). Offers an extensive menu of Southeast Asian street food.
- Their chicken on a stick shish kebabs (served with pita bread) are a staple, but their specialties, like Cambodian noodle soup, are also excellent.
Charleys, Plum: One of the rare standalone Charleys Cheesesteaks and Wings, the sandwich hub is located in the Holiday Park Shopping Center on Golden Mile Highway. With a drive-thru option, Charleys is open until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays.
- Come for the classic cheesesteak. Stay for the bone-in wings, loaded fries or mozzarella sticks that you can wash down with a watermelon strawberry lemonade.
La Grassa Pizza at The Vandal, Lawrenceville: This posh Butler Street restaurant transforms into a hip pizza joint at 10pm every Saturday. Pizzas are served late or until they run out. The bar is open until midnight.
- La Grassa's fat pizzas are cooked on high-rising square dough that ensures every slice is a corner with a chewy, crispy edge. Order one or two with friends, and enjoy with the Vandal's superb cocktails.
Ocha Thai Noodle, Oakland: Serving sleepless students until 2am Sunday-Wednesday and until 3am Thursday-Saturday, this popular Thai spot has craveable noodles, rice and curries.
- Try the mango fried rice or pad see-ew. And save room for a sweet dessert.
Primanti Bros., Strip District: Old heads remember when this original Primanti's location was open 24 hours, but it maintains its late-night spirit with the kitchen serving until midnight Sunday-Thursday, and until 2am Friday-Saturday.
- A spiced or smoky meat works best with the city's signature sandwich, so opt for kielbasa, capicola or pastrami.
- The wings are also underrated, and loaded cheese fries are a classic for the early morning hours.
Sheetz: Foodies might scoff at the idea of a gas station making great food, but not only is Sheetz open 24 hours, it has some tasty treats if you know what to order.
- The grilled cheese on sourdough bread is incredible, especially when adding some pickles and considering its price. A combo with fries and drink is $5.
- Don't sleep on Sheetz coffee if you really want to keep the night going. Each cup is brewed fresh to order.
