Republican Sen.Dave McCormick addressed some anxiety Pittsburgh universities were feeling following proposed cuts to research funding.
Context: The National Institutes of Health announced billions in cuts nationally, potentially taking away tens of millions from the University of Pittsburgh and other local institutions.
The cuts are currently held up in courts due to legal challenges.
What they're saying: McCormick told reporters in Ross on Friday that any existing grants should not be cut midstream.
"Let's not do anything disruptive, because we don't want to upset the research enterprise, which has been so valuable to America and so valuable to Pittsburgh."
Yes, but: That doesn't mean those grants shouldn't come under the microscope in the future, said McCormick. He encouraged a "thoughtful review" to determine that indirect costs related to the grants aren't being overinflated.
