La Prima Espresso Co. is planting its flag in Oakland with a new cafe opening May 12, the company tells Axios.
Why it matters: The roughly 1,000-square-foot space at 3400 Fifth Ave. will be the North Side-based coffee roaster's fifth Pittsburgh cafe, joining spots in the Strip District, Downtown and on Carnegie Mellon's campus.
Dig in: The menu will match La Prima's other locations, offering Italian-style espresso drinks like cappuccinos, lattes, macchiatos and cortados, along with filter coffee and cold brew.
- Non-coffee options include matcha and chai lattes, hot chocolate and Harney & Sons teas. Pastries will come from Mediterra Bakehouse.
The big picture: The cafe aims to catch the early crowd, like hospital staff and college students, owner and founder Sam Patti said.
- "This new location will serve as a gathering place for students, professionals and residents alike, providing a cozy atmosphere to enjoy our coffee and connect with one another," he said.
The big picture: Patti founded La Prima in 1988 to sell and service commercial espresso machines from a showroom in the Strip District, but it quickly grew into a full-service espresso bar.
- Now, company roasts and sells over 20 varieties of coffee and supplies to cafes, markets and restaurants nationwide.
Stop by: Hours will vary, but the cafe will initially open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 5:30am-4pm, Wednesday and Friday 5:30am-5:30pm and Saturday-Sunday 6:30am-2:30pm, per La Prima.
