Pittsburgh's metro ranked 18th in the nation for artificial intelligence job openings in January, by one estimate.
Why it matters: The city is home to a burgeoning AI hub, and a two-year initiative called AI Strike Team wants to make the region a national leader by attracting private investment and data center buildout.
Zoom in: The region had 281 listings for jobs requiring AI skills, representing 1.6% of AI openings among the country's top 75 metros.
Pittsburgh outperformed Detroit, Cleveland and Columbus.
How it works: The estimates come from UMD-LinkUp AI Maps, a collaboration between the University of Maryland, job listings platform LinkUp and Outrigger Group, a consultancy and executive firm.
The researchers involved are using AI to analyze job postings for roles requiring AI skills.
Zoom out: New York, Seattle and San Jose had the most overall AI job openings.
The country's long-standing tech hot spots are still hard to beat.
