Local brewery Burghers moved into a large new facility in Millvale this week, with an eye on defining the region's smashburger and lager scene.
Why it matters: The move gives the brewery a new flagship location to expand capacity and distribute its beers widely for the first time.
The vibe: The new 14,000-square-foot space is split across two levels, with one bar on each floor.
- It's housed in a former bank building complete with a revolving front door and a massive safe in the back that functions as a dining room. (Cell service is shaky in the safe, but Wi-Fi works.)
- 25 off-street parking spaces are located behind the building.
- Large windows facing Grant Street let in natural light.
- Several pinball machines and a few arcade games are located on the second level.
- It soft-launched last weekend and officially opened on Monday.
🍔 The menu: The restaurant currently offers a dozen specialty burgers — including one with a pierogi and another with blue cheese and roasted mushrooms — and co-owner and head chef Fiore Moletz said he will be rolling out a bunch of new creations at the Millvale spot.
- We had the mini Liberty burger, which comes with American cheese, tomatoes and pickles. We added caramelized onions for the classic burger taste. It was beefy, and satisfying and came with crispy fries.
- Burghers is one of the pioneers popularizing smashburgers in the region. They also have plant-based patties and an award-winning beef/mushroom combo called "The Blend."
- The location has 20 beers on tap, with a heavy focus on lagers. We had the 1890, which is light, crisp and flavorful. A perfect lunch lager.

What they're saying: Moletz said he always wanted to expand into the Millvale area because he grew up in neighboring Shaler.
- "We wanted to be back in Shaler, and we wanted to be on the Brewery Trail," he said, noting the close proximity to Grist House and Strange Roots breweries. "I think every neighborhood should have a burger place."
- Co-owner and head brewery Neil Glausier said Millvale's 20-barrel system is the biggest the brewery has ever had.
- "Getting to this point is a big boost for us," he said.
Context: Burghers opened its first location in Zelionople in 2010.
- It has since expanded to spots in Lawrenceville and South Side.

Fun fact: The building doubled as a bomb shelter during the Cold War, said Moletz.
⛱️ What's next: Moletz said a patio space will be coming to the flagship soon.
If you go: Burghers Millvale is open starting at 11am every day.
- Located at 400 Grant Ave.
- Happy hour runs from 3-6pm Monday-Friday, with $2 off drafts and other food specials.
