Corey O'Connor picks up trades union endorsements

Zoom in: O'Connor received support from about a dozen local trade unions representing thousands of workers across the Pittsburgh region.

• O'Connor received support from local Teamsters, Steamfitters, Plumbers, Bricklayers, Boilermakers, Painters and Ironworkers.

What they're saying: Brian Herbinko, business manager of International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, Local 57, stated his union endorsed Gainey in 2021 but is supporting O'Connor this year due to the controversy over Gainey's police chief resigning to referee college basketball and slow permitting reform for city development.

• "Over the past three years, members and staff at [the painters union] watched as campaign promises went ignored and unfilled," Herbinko said at a press conference at Ironworkers Local 3 headquarters in the Strip District.

Between the lines: O'Connor emphasized his campaign promises to expedite the city's permitting process and boost development during the endorsement announcement.

• "The hardworking men and women standing here with me today were the ones that built this city and they know how to rebuild Pittsburgh," he said.

The other side: Gainey has gained the support of United Steelworkers, which has 12,000 members in the Pittsburgh area.

What's next: The primary election is May 20.
