Record gift helps Miami top $1B fundraising goal

Driving the news: The foundation, established by Miami alumnus and Cintas founder Dick Farmer, announced Thursday it intends to give the money to the business school over the next decade.

Zoom in: The funding will go toward expanding technology training, hands-on learning and career preparation.

• The goal is to give every student a personalized career plan, industry certifications and global learning opportunities, per a university press release.

What they're saying: Dean Jenny Darroch says the school wants students to learn more than just how to use AI.

• AI is rewriting every career's starting point, she said in the statement. "Our job is not simply to introduce students to those tools, but to develop leaders who know when to trust them, when to question them, and how to use them responsibly."

Flashback: The Farmer family's ties to Miami span generations.

• Dick Farmer graduated in 1956, followed by his wife, Joyce, in 1957.
• The couple helped establish the business school with a gift in 1992 and committed $30 million toward its current Oxford building in 2015. It also made a then-record $40 million gift in 2016.

The last word: "Our parents were shaped by their time at Miami, and a love of the university was passed down to their three children," said their son, Scott Farmer, Cintas' executive chairman.
