Watch out for mosquitos after all this rain

• They will stick around for 10-14 days, Maricopa County Vector Control division manager John Townsend tells Axios.

Catch up quick: Last week, two rounds of storms hit Mesa Monday through Wednesday.

• Some neighborhoods received up to 4 inches, Townsend says, flooding streets, washes and retention basins.

Zoom in: Alta Mesa, Las Alegres, Sunland Village, Red Mountain Park, Carriage Manor and Parkwood Ranch received the most rain, Townsend adds.

Threat level: The expected floodwater mosquitoes are aggressive biters, but they don't transmit the West Nile virus to people, Li says.

What to know: University of Arizona entomologist Shujuan "Lucy" Li offers several tips to keep the bugs away.

🫙 Empty and scrub any containers holding water in your yard.

🌧️ Cover or screen rainwater containers.

🚰 Fix leaking faucets and hoses and avoid overwatering.

🧴 Use a mosquito repellent.

📞 Report breeding sites or heavy biting activity to Maricopa County.

🌆 Limit outdoor activity around dawn and dusk.

Between the lines: Draining your yard now won't get rid of mosquitoes that have already emerged, but it can prevent another generation.
