Midtown houses are dressing up for Halloween

Flashback: Shirtwaist houses went up across KC's original neighborhoods, from Hyde Park to Brookside, mostly in the early 1900s.

• Limestone quarries and brick factories on both sides of the state line kept materials flowing, and the heavy stone walls helped keep homes cool.

Zoom in: The style is named for the shirtwaist blouse popular with working women at the time, with a sturdy stone or brick first floor for a "waist," a lighter wood or stucco top and a steep roof for a collar.

• The wide, covered porch makes a great big mouth, and the two windows above it look like, well, you can guess.

State of play: We found this house in Southmoreland, and Reddit users say others are lurking across Midtown.

💭 Travis' thought bubble: I don't have a house with a porch, but someday I will, and this is giving me ideas.

• The uvula on the door is a nice touch.
