Survey: Should Missouri highways increase to 75 mph?

Driving the news: A new law goes into effect on Friday that allows rural highways to have 75 mph speed limits.

• The Missouri Department of Transportation is looking at I-29, I-35, I-49 and I-44, KOMU reports.

Yes, but: Speed limits don't increase until the signs say so, and officials say a decision might not come until the end of the year.

• I-70, which connects KC, Columbia and St. Louis, is not yet on the table, thanks to the Improve I-70 construction project.
• MoDOT says it will reevaluate upping the I-70 speed limit after the project's completion, which is anticipated at the end of 2030.

Reality check: 5 mph doesn't do much. You'd save about 10 minutes driving roughly 160 miles from Kansas City to Joplin, not accounting for slower urban zones.

• And going north, you'd have to slow back down to 70 as soon as you hit the Iowa border.

Caveat: After Kansas changed some of its freeways to 75 mph in 2011, a study found a 35% increase in traffic deaths.
