Today is National Hot Dog Day, and KC has more spots than ever to celebrate.
The big picture: In the land of burnt ends, the hot dog is quietly building a case for itself.
By the numbers: Americans spent more than $11 billion on hot dogs and sausages at U.S. supermarkets in 2025, per the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, up from $8.5 billion in 2024.
- July, which the Council also designates National Hot Dog Month, accounts for 10% of annual retail sales.
The intrigue: Believe it or not, there's such a thing as a "Kansas City hot dog." Just don't ask Kansas Citians what's on it.
- Wirecutter recently had chef José Andrés rank regional hot dogs, and a KC-style version made the bracket. But when the Kansas City Star asked local foodies, cooks and hot dog enthusiasts to define one, nobody could.

Ding Dong Dogs
The metro's newest hot dog joint sits across from UMKC, inspired by owner Matt McLain's favorite childhood spot in Oak Park, Illinois.
- Try the Ma'Homie Frito Pie, the Big Salvy or the Roo-Up Dog, a barbecue nod to the Roos next door.
Something Good
Owner Greta Gunderson's "fun, not fancy" cocktail bar opened last summer in the garden level of the Garment District's historic Carnival Building.
- The menu runs from a classic Chicago dog to the Dallas dog with shredded cheese and bacon.
Wiener Kitchen
This spot in Overland Park has been at it the longest. It started as the Wiener Wagon cart in 2012 and now serves breakfast and lunch, Wednesday through Saturday.
Bar Phoebe
The Crossroads rooftop bar, named for KC suffragist Phoebe Jane Ess, opened in June with a menu built on American nostalgia.
- The menu pairs hot dogs with walking tacos and slices of pie, served with downtown views.
