What we're eating: Hemma Hemma Dinette

A breakfast-lunch spot downtown is serving up "funky aunt-chic" vibes and the tallest breakfast biscuits we've ever seen.

Dig in: Hemma Hemma Dinette opened in March on the ground floor of Lightwell KC at 1100 Main St. — a sister concept to Hemma Hemma in Waldo.

• The daytime restaurant and bar make everything from scratch, pulling from retro diner culture and global flavors.
• We came for a work meeting and stayed for breakfast.

What to try: The R.F.G.B. sandwich ($13), a sausage egg and cheese biscuit sandwich that felt like a shot put and tasted like heaven. It's worth the flaky mess, and the half Travis took home reheated well.

• The avocado toast ($12) was thick-cut and scalloped with tasty veggies.
• The blackberry espresso tonic ($6.50) is seasonal and won't be around much longer.

💭 Abbey's thought bubble: The avocado toast is one fried egg away from a 10/10. Delicious nonetheless!

💭 Travis' thought bubble: The atmosphere is a great mix of homey and fresh, and the menu has a lot more I'd be interested in trying. I'll be back.

If you go: The dinette is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm, but the kitchen closes at 3pm.

As the restaurant puts it: "Hemma Sweet Hemma."
