KC mayor proposes $235M for CPKC Stadium expansion

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas is proposing that the city provide up to $235 million to help fund a CPKC Stadium expansion.
Why it matters: The funding would be tied into the KC Current's larger plan to further develop its riverfront district, even as public funding for stadium construction faces scrutiny.
The big picture: As the first phase of the KC Current's mixed-use district — apartments, restaurants, a town square and a new park — nears completion, leaders are already looking at the next phase: more seats, buildings and parking.
What's inside: The ordinance says City Council would affirm "its commitment to support the expansion of CPKC Stadium."
- It says a larger development plan including the expansion, a new parking garage, additional mixed-use development and infrastructure improvements is estimated at $1.4 billion.
- City Manager Mario Vasquez would enter into negotiations to provide up to $235 million through bonds tied to the district's future tax revenue.
- The ordinance directs Vasquez to seek state funding.
What they're saying: "The Kansas City Current is proud to continue investing in the future of Kansas City and the continued growth of the riverfront," the team said in a statement to Axios, adding that they've invested $350 million already.
- Lucas tells Axios the stadium expansion could reach a capacity of 18,000, roughly a 50% increase.
Friction point: Stadium tax incentives are under intense scrutiny after City Council voted to help the Royals build downtown.
- Low-wage advocacy group Missouri Workers Power said earlier this month that they planned to submit more than 4,500 signatures to the city clerk in an attempt to force a public vote on the city's stadium funding.
The other side: In a statement following the signatures, Lucas said that "Kansas City will continue to operate respectfully, but swiftly to ensure it remains competitive," pointing to the Chiefs' move to Kansas.
- The mayor's office didn't immediately respond to Axios' questions about the intent to use public funding for the Current's expansion after pushback on the Royals stadium.
