Earlier this month, I visited Kansas City for the first time — the barbecue lived up to the hype, and the coffee scene was staggering.
But it was the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum that stuck with me.
Why it matters: It's worth reflecting on that history, not just because Wednesday is Jackie Robinson Day, which commemorates the moment in 1947 when Robinson broke Major League Baseball's color barrier.
Between the lines: Robinson's debut is often framed as a new chapter in professional baseball. At the museum, it feels more like a turning point in a chapter that racism delayed.
Long before 1947, Black players had already built a thriving baseball world out of exclusion, doubt, and necessity.
- The Negro Leagues weren't just a precursor to integration. They were an institution.
Yes, and: That institution mirrored the country around it.
- Black newspapers documented the games and elevated players mainstream outlets ignored — underscoring the role media played in sustaining the leagues.
- Kansas City became a key hub during the Great Migration, a part of the story often overshadowed by narratives centered on Chicago, Detroit and the coasts.
What stood out: Walking through the museum, the parallels to today are hard to ignore.
- Questions about access, ownership and who controls the narrative still echo.
The bottom line: Integration didn't just open doors — it reshaped what existed before.
- As Black players entered Major League Baseball, much of the Negro Leagues' ecosystem faded. But the memory is kept alive in Kansas City.
