Kansas voters are one week away from elections that will define the direction of their cities at the most local level.
What we're watching: Here are some of the biggest races and issues that will show up at the ballot box on Nov. 4.
Prairie Village
A ballot question will ask residents if they want to "abandon" the city's current form of government — without putting an alternative in place — the Johnson County Post reports.
- Proponents of the measure argue that the city's "strong mayor" government gives one official too much power, while opponents say the current government has helped Prairie Village become the thriving suburb it is today.
City Council candidates are also split on funding a $30 million city hall and municipal complex, The Beacon reports.
Overland Park
Almost every seat in Overland Park's City Council is contested — including the mayor's. Ward 6 will have an uncontested newcomer.
- Candidates are focused on how the metro's biggest suburb continues to grow, with some pushing to repurpose existing buildings rather than build new ones, the Kansas City Star reports.
Unified Government
Kansas City, Kansas, will elect a new mayor after Tyrone Garner announced he would not seek reelection.
- Garner is the third mayor in a row to opt for one term.
- The two candidates — Rose Mulvany Henry and Christal Watson — are running on different approaches to development, safety and government culture, The Beacon reports.
