The big picture: KC Tenants' annual Yeehaw! benefit show returns Oct. 2, hosted by comedian and Kansas City native Caleb Hearon and Grammy-nominated singer Katie Crutchfield, known as Waxahatchee.
Hearon's "So True" podcast topped 1 million downloads in its first three months, and Crutchfield's latest album "Tigers Blood" earned a Grammy nomination.
Their draw gives KC Tenants a bigger stage and fresh recruits, according to the union.
Zoom in: KC Tenants has used this show to grow its reach and fund its fights.
Last year's fundraiser helped fuel rent strikes at Quality Hill and Independence Towers, where tenants withheld more than $60,000 in rent to demand what organizers call long-overdue repairs.
What they're saying: "Caleb and Waxahatchee have just been longtime supporters of the tenant union," organizer Magda Werkmeister told Axios. "It really kind of speaks to the culture of joy and fun and humor that we believe in … and to the good nature of Kansas Citians."
"I want people to feel their stake in the work and to recognize that we're stronger together," Werkmeister said.
What's next: You can purchase tickets here. General admission starts at $57.
