Born in 2017 as a jazz-district block party, 816 Day has ballooned into a citywide celebration of Kansas City's culture, with music, food and events across the metro this Saturday.
Why it matters: On 8/16 — a nod to Kansas City's original area code — the city turns every block, bar and bass line into a celebration.
- It's a day when KC shows off, block by block and bass line by bass line, with shopping deals, street parties, concerts, sports and even a month-long KC Streetcar scavenger hunt.
The vibe: Think the smell of burnt ends drifting from food trucks, brass notes spilling onto brick sidewalks, kids licking snow cones while waving KC Current rally towels.
- It's sweaty, loud, unpolished and unmistakably ours.
The big picture: Saturday is the main blowout, but 816 Day Bingo runs through Sept. 13 (913 Day), turning your Streetcar rides and downtown errands into a prize hunt.
What they're saying: "816 Day brings together mouthwatering restaurants, passionate musicians and creative vendors — an energy that's infectious and makes you want to keep coming back," Makenzie Wolters, communications manager for Visit KC, told Axios.
Where to go: Saturday is packed, but these are among our top picks.
- 🥃 J. Rieger & Co. will host live music in Electric Park, a vendor market, story time with The Rabbit Hole and $8.16 cocktails. 10am-10pm
- 🎉 Power & Light will host a giant block party with vendors, kids' activities and live entertainment. 11am-9pm
- 🎨 Zona Rosa's free 816 Block Party includes KC sports cameos, a muralist and live music. 4-7pm
- 🌊 Creekside in Parkville will bring out the KC Current Teal Mobile, plus vendors and appearances. Noon–9pm
💭 Abbey's thought bubble: I'll be in Electric Park, losing count of Gardenia cocktails.
What to eat and buy: More than 30 local businesses will offer $8.16 deals or 8.16% discounts, including:
What to watch: Kansas City's teams are in action all day, so you've got options whether you're headed to the stadium or staying near a screen.
- ⚽ ️ KC Current vs. Orlando Pride at 3pm
- ⚾️ Royals vs. White Sox at 6:10pm
The bottom line: KC will be loud, local and fully itself on Saturday. Whether you're hopping the Streetcar, road-tripping to Parkville or raising a glass downtown at 8:16pm sharp, the only wrong move is staying home.
