I love downtown, but last week I asked which KC suburb is worth breaking the routine. Y'all delivered. Here's what you said:
🏆 Grandview took gold
One reader sent a love letter to the south side city, complete with dining, trails and what may be the most eccentric front yard in town.
- They wrote: At Duck Road and 13th Street, you'll find a yard covered in mosaic and concrete sculptures, dubbed the "Watts Towers of Grandview," or "St. Peter's," depending on the rooster count.
💭Abbey's thought bubble: I don't know what that means, but I'm going to find out.
Also on their itinerary:
- Encore Coffee & Chocolates, helmed by a gold medal-winning chocolatier
- Art House 808, a funky art studio
- Tacos at El Alteño on Main
- Scoops from Simply Grand Kitchen and Creamery
- A trek along the Little Blue River Trail via Meadowmere Park
Parkville got a shout-out
Just 15-20 minutes from downtown, Parkville was described as "super cute" by Michael B., who said the city has solid restaurants, trails and local shopping.
- I was advised to just wander around.
Weston came in loud
Richard M. said simply: "Weston!!!"
- Enough said. I agree that the apple orchards, wineries and small-town Hallmark vibes speak for themselves.
And then there was this:
"Don't bother," one reader advised, "unless you have a specific destination — or family."
- They still recommended Stroud's in Overland Park and Woodson Antiques and Interiors in Raymore, so all is forgiven.
The bottom line: You really want me out of downtown, and I'm taking notes (and snack recs). Keep them coming.
