Snitch on the ditch: Delaware Street trench getting filled

A longtime resident of the River Market — the Delaware Street ditch across the street from Il Lazzarone — is meeting its maker after years of head-scratching existence.
Why it matters: Local developers are filling the ditch and renovating the building next door to create the neighborhood's only hotel.
Zoom in: The maw opened up in 2021 as part of preconstruction for a proposed "skinny" boutique hotel and condo building.
- That plan was scratched due to increasing construction costs and interest rates, according to The KC Pulse.
Zoom out: The same folks are back with bigger plans — renovate the building next door into the River Market Hotel and turn the ditch into two patios.
- One patio will be on the Delaware Street level, and the other will be at the alley level below, developing partner Gino Serra told Axios.
State of play: Workers are shoring up a stone wall that was uncovered in the pit. They're bringing it up to street level in anticipation of the new build.
- "The hole is actually the basement of the building that used to be [there]," Serra said.
What's next: The hotel's website states it plans to open by spring 2026.
