Huntsville's live music growth raises the stakes for sustainability

A message from: Orion Amphitheater

Large concerts create a basic sustainability challenge: The more people a venue serves, the more food, drinks, materials and waste it has to manage.
Huntsville's Orion Amphitheater is redesigning those systems to reduce the environmental impact of bringing thousands of people together.
The idea: The Orion reduces its footprint by changing how it handles the materials concertgoers use during each show.
Instead of relying on one environmental initiative, the venue focuses on the systems it controls throughout an event, like what vendors serve, where guests return their cups and what happens to food waste after the crowd leaves.
The proof: The Orion has maintained 100% landfill diversion since it opened in 2022.
The venue sorts waste among recycling, composting and waste-to-energy, working with Reworld's Huntsville facility to keep remaining material out of landfills.
- In 2025, The Orion recycled 65.14% of the waste generated across the venue.
Here's how: The system begins before guests throw anything away.
The Orion bans single-use plastics from its campus and requires vendors to use compostable serviceware.
Reusable cups tackle another high-volume source of waste: Guests return the cups to marked bins, allowing The Orion to wash them and put them back into circulation rather than supply a new disposable cup with every drink.
- The venue estimates that its reusable cup system can prevent over 300,000 single-use plastic cups from entering landfills each year.
Here's what else: The Orion's sustainability work also connects what happens at the concession stand with what grows outside it by returning organic material to the soil.
The Orion also grows some of the ingredients it serves and composts food waste for its Artist Garden, a set of on-site beds to supply ingredients for artist meals, cocktails and dishes served at the Orion.
- Through its work with EarthTouch, the Orion has doubled the garden from 13 beds to 30 since the venue opened, and grown more than 700 pounds of organic produce onsite since 2022.
- In 2025, the garden supplied 100% of the mint used in The Orion's bar program during the growing season and composted 4,688 pounds of food waste, its highest annual total yet.
Composting sends organic material from venue operations back into the gardens where it can support another growing season, creating a circular ecosystem within the venue itself.
- The Orion reintroduced large-scale composting to Huntsville by bringing in NewTerra from Chattanooga.
Next steps: Huntsville continues to invest in live music.
The city's growing calendar, plans for additional venues and The Orion's attendance all point toward a music economy designed to bring more artists and audiences to the region.
But more live entertainment will require more resources to support it.
- That gives venues like The Orion more opportunities to improve the systems behind each show, and show what sustainability can look like at scale.
