I love the backyard this time of year. Photos: Derek Lacey/Axios
The weather is (mostly) great, and the garden is really kicking into gear.
The big picture: It's becoming more and more difficult to stay at my desk working and not wander around the backyard checking on my plants.
State of play: Pea harvests have been ongoing for about a week, and my tomatoes, potatoes, squash, pumpkins, peppers, melons and ground cherries are well on their way.
🤞 Here's to getting some squash harvested before the Squash Vine Borers wake up.
Every year I pour a bag of mixed wildflower seeds around the crepe myrtle. Photo: Derek Lacey/Axios
The latest: This year we've got some new additions, too.
An Eastern box turtle has camped out somewhere in the yard and is making the occasional appearance.
Birds are colonizing the yard as well, including one family with hatchlings in the bird house, and some robins with a few on the way, who made a nest on one of my fence gates that's now unusable for the foreseeable future.
The bottom line: Your backyard springing to life, too? Hit reply and send me a photo!
