Bryce Mason is a stand-out walk-on.
Why it matters: Mason, a Madison native, was awarded a $10,000 scholarship Tuesday, awarded by Walk-On's Sports Bistreaux celebrating the underdog.
Zoom in: Mason overcame a family tragedy and numerous injuries, including a broken hand and severely sprained ankle, all while remaining a beacon of toughness and positivity for his team, an announcement says.
Off the court, Mason helps lead the annual Rocket City Buddy Walk for Down's Syndrome and provides food and basketballs for — and plays ball with — children at New Futures Homeless Shelter.
Catch up quick: The scholarship, one of 13 being awarded by Walk-On's Sports Bistreaux to honor walk-on athlete Jason Kelce's 13-year NFL career.
The bottom line: "I decided I would give my all to this team and do what it takes to succeed," Mason said in the announcement.
