Huntsville City Schools is full steam ahead on its $600-million, 10-year capital plan.
Why it matters: Huntsville is working to provide state-of-the-art facilities for its nearly 24,000 students and 3,000 staff, HCS Superintendent Clarence Sutton told the City Council last week.
Catch up quick: He shared completed highlights of the plan, including installation of artificial turf on all baseball and softball fields, and the elimination of all pod gyms throughout the system.
Zoom in: The council presented a $5.5-million check to the school system at the meeting Thursday, the result of closing Tax Increment Financing (TIF) districts last year.
The districts diverted growth in property tax revenue to pay for infrastructure improvements meant to spur economic development that increased the tax base.
On average, those districts closed 13 years early after supporting nearly $60 million in infrastructure projects, including $23 million tied to schools.
