Get out next Saturday and round up some invasive species with Huntsville Green Team, the Land Trust of North Alabama and Wild Ones-North Alabama Chapter.
Why it matters: Invasive species crowd out native species that local ecosystems depend on, and the event will give hands-on experience in identifying common invasives and proper removal techniques.
Removal is critical to keep them from spreading into neighboring parks, greenways and residential areas, per a city release.
Zoom in: From 9am-noon on Monday, organizers will work at three locations:
Green Team at Southside Park: 16159 Chaney Thompson Road
Land Trust of North Alabama at Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve: 1263 Chapman Mountain Road.
Wild Ones-North Alabama Chapter at Monte Sano State Park (registration required): 5105 Nolan Ave. SE.
How it works: Church groups, gardening clubs and other organizations are welcome. Volunteers must be 16 years old.
What they're saying: "A lot of areas that we have are, for lack of a better word, infested with invasive plants," Green Team Manager Niki Sothers told Axios while talking about the Joy McKee Arboretum at last week's Arbor Day event.
Many people see invasive plants on greenways or in other areas and think they belong there, she said, adding that they hope to make it an annual event.
