It was crowded and they were training, but I was in and out in around 20 minutes. Photo: Derek Lacey/Axios
City Barbeque opened its doors Monday, too, for a soft opening and training.
The big picture: The city's newest barbecue joint, and the Ohio-based chain's first Alabama location, is hoping to make a splash as it wades into a crowded market.
Zoom in: The restaurant, offering meats smoked on-site, house-made sides and full-service catering, is on South Memorial Parkway near Hobbs Road.
What they're saying: "We've been smoking barbeque for over 25 years, and we are proud to now be part of the Alabama barbeque community," said CEO Mike Muldoon in a statement.

💠Derek's thought bubble: I dropped by on Tuesday. I live close by and have been watching the project's progress, so when I saw the full parking lot, I grabbed one of the last few spots.
I didn't realize it was a training event (even with the banner outside), but they were offering a limited, free menu.
I got a chicken sandwich with the baked beans with brisket and corn pudding. They threw in a rib sample.
The bottom line: I think I'm too easy to please to make a good restaurant reviewer. I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the corn pudding and rib.
