Monday marks 40 years since the first federal observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and Huntsville is keeping up the momentum.
Why it matters: Like many three-day weekends Americans enjoy, it's more than a day off work — it's a time to reflect on King's legacy and vision, and how service can carry those forward.
Zoom in: Here are a few local happenings to help you plan out your weekend.
🥁 The annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Parade, hosted by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, is set for tomorrow, from noon to around 2 pm.
The parade starts at the corner of Holmes Avenue and Woodson Street and finishes at the corner of Church Street and Williams Avenue.
Huntsville Police Department released road closure details Thursday, including Williams Avenue between Church Street and Dr. Joseph E Lowery Boulevard, which closes at 8am.
🥞 The Martin Luther King Unity Breakfast, also by Alpha Phi Alpha, is set for 8am Monday at the Von Braun Center's Saturn Ballroom.
Per organizers, it's the largest in the Southeast, bringing more than 1,300 people together at the VBC.
🕊️ The MLK Day of Action and Beloved Community Dinner are Monday as well, encouraging folks to volunteer in the morning and reflect during the day before the dinner and program at 6pm at the Omega Center.
Hosted by the Alabama Association for the Arts, the free dinner and program will feature community art exhibits, musical tributes, table talks and a keynote by Jessica Fortune Barker, a certified Kingian nonviolence trainer.
