Bundle up this weekend, folks. And maybe drip your faucets and wrap your pipes.
Why it matters: The forecast is looking downright frigid this weekend and there's a chance for freezing rain overnight Saturday night.
Zoom in: The National Weather Service forecasts a low of 35 tonight, and while Saturday is looking good (sunny, high 57), Saturday night is looking ominous.
- A 30% chance of rain before 3am gives way to freezing rain and a low around 23. And it won't warm up much on Sunday, with a forecasted high of 30.
- The low Sunday night is set for 16. Yeesh.
What they're saying: "We've got a front passing through Saturday during the day, but it's going to take about 24 hours for that cold air to seep in behind it," Becca Darish, meteorologist with NWS in Huntsville, told Axios.
Yes, but: While NWS only forecasts about a week out, the climate outlook for 8-14 days out is showing a trend toward warmer-than-normal weather, she said.
- Normal temperatures for the second half of December range in the low- to mid-50s for highs and lows in the 40s.
- The outlook through Christmas Eve is showing an 80-90% probability for highs in the 60s instead for the next couple weeks, with lows still in the 40s, Darish said.
What we're watching: NWS doesn't forecast as far out as Christmas Day, but she said there's no sign of additional fronts popping up, so it's likely those warm temperatures will carry through Christmas Day.
