Redstone Arsenal is likely about to get more flexibility in how it staffs gates.
Why it matters: Staffing shortages have limited hours and access at gates this year, leading to more traffic and longer lines for the roughly 44,000 people traveling to and from the installation every day.
In an email to Axios, Strong said, "I am optimistic that the Senate will take up the bill in short order and it will make its way to President Trump's desk quickly, with the wins for Redstone Arsenal included."
Catch up quick: Arsenal leadership said this month in an update reported by Redstone Rocket that congestion on Martin Road and at the gates is due to staffing levels, not the recent government shutdown.
Gates 1 and 7 currently close to inbound traffic at 1:30pm, and starting Monday, Gate 3 will operate the same (open Monday-Friday 5:30am-1:30pm then outbound only 1:30-9pm).
Gate 3 had previously closed to both directions at 1pm.
What they're saying: "By modernizing this outdated law, installations facing security guard or firefighter shortages will have the authority they need to bring in contracted personnel, keep operations smooth, and stay focused on their mission," Strong said in a release.
How it works: The bill now heads to the Senate, which is expected to pass it next week, and then on to President Trump, who has said he will sign it once it reaches his desk, per Reuters.
