Thanks to geomagnetic storms, Alabama's skies lit up Tuesday night with the aurora borealis, or Northern Lights.
The big picture: It's a rare and awe-inspiring occurrence, and one that lit up social media with photos from across the region.
📷 Derek's thought bubble: I didn't expect to actually see them, but ran outside with my camera as soon as I saw a post online that they were visible.
They weren't quite as prominent with the naked eye as in the photo above, but they were definitely visible, and having seen the aurora borealis in Iceland, I recognized it immediately.
