Huntsville is in its secondtornado season, as shown by severe weather warnings late last week.
Why it matters: It's closing in on the holiday season, but severe weather could still hit the area this year.
Zoom in: Typically, the second tornado season spans late October to early December, Kurt Weber, meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Huntsville, tells Axios.
Shorter than the spring tornado season that runs from late February to early May, Weber said the second season can still produce bigger tornadoes and damaging winds.
The deadliest tornado to hit Huntsville made landfall Nov. 15, 1989, resulting in 21 deaths and destroying nearly 260 homes in the Jones Valley area.
How it works: Colder fronts that normally stay to the north of the area in the summer come farther south, clashing with the warm air, Weber said.
Pair that with stronger winds from the jet stream, and you get storms.
"In layman's terms, the biggest thing is the clash of the air masses," and the jet stream bringing stronger winds south, he said.
