Millions in renovation work at the Von Braun Center and the extension of a policing agreement with Huntsville Housing Authority are headlining tonight's City Council meeting.
Why it matters: Huntsville continues investing in facilities as HHA grapples with recent shootings.
Zoom in: An almost $3.3-million contract with Modern Mechanical Systems, LLC would demolish and replace the existing ice system at the VBC's Propst Arena by the end of September 2026.
A second contract worth almost $1.3 million with Wallace Construction would go toward the full renovation of several restrooms at the VBC's South Hall and Playhouse area.
The renewal of a longstanding contract with the Huntsville Housing Authority for community policing, set for tonight's agenda, would continue providing up to six officers and liaison for specialized patrols and community policing services.
Huntsville Police Department Sgt. Chris Jackson tells Axios the department has partnered with HHA for 25 years.
"A dedicated liaison and voluntary overtime patrols ensure regular connection between officers, HHA staff and residents," he said. "It keeps our officers' familiar with the communities they serve, promoting trust and collaboration — not just enforcement."
What they're saying: "We've had a good working relationship," Council Member Bill Kling told Axios. "They have very good community relations because the officers get out of the car ... encountering people in a positive manner."
Driving the news: Recent shootings have led to an HHA curfew and a spotlight on safety.
A suspect in one of those shootings was arrested Tuesday in Milwaukee on murder and assault charges.
Catch up quick: The mayor will also make a proclamation about Huntsville's additions to the recently-announced Michelin Guide to the American South, and the council will honor St. Bartley Primitive Baptist Church on its 205th anniversary.
What we're watching: Some big rezoning decisions are being scheduled for future meetings, including more than 380 acres near the I-565/65 intersection which could eventually see up to 3,000 housing units.
