Ivey pens $2M for food banks

Gov. Kay Ivey announced $2 million from the state's emergency funds going to eight food banks throughout Alabama.

Why it matters: As the government shutdown continues and November SNAP benefits not reaching the state's more than 750,000 recipients, food banks are picking up the slack.

• The Food Bank of North Alabama, serving Alabama 11 northernmost counties, is one of the recipients.

What they're saying: "There are real Alabama families who rely on SNAP to put food on their tables, and that includes more than 300,000 children, more than 102,000 seniors and those who are disabled," Ivey said in an announcement Tuesday.

• The state is also sending $300 to each of the 11,434 children in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.

Yes, but: "Hear me loud and clear when I say Alabama cannot be both the state and federal government," Ivey said.
