The longer the government shutdown drags on, the more it's impacting Huntsville.
Why it matters: More than 45,000 employees work on Redstone Arsenal every day, and their salaries fuel Huntsville businesses.
Zoom in: The shutdown also means more than 376,000 households in Alabama could go without SNAP benefits next month, as other states begin to warn of funds running out.
- The Alabama Department of Human Resources didn't immediately respond to an Axios inquiry Wednesday, but the Trump administration has warned that funds aren't available after October.
Context: NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center is closed, and Redstone Arsenal has adjusted gate hours during the shutdown.
✈️ All clear at HSV (so far)
- So far, the shutdown hasn't impacted operations at Huntsville International Airport, officials said Tuesday, but TSA and air traffic controllers are under federal purview.
- A TSA spokesperson told Axios Huntsville its "operations remain minimally impacted," and asked for the public's patience and understanding.
- "The longer the shutdown goes on, the more severe the impact on our TSA workforce who have expenses they must pay for, making it harder to show up for work when not being paid," the spokesperson said.
- In an email, the FAA said it's not responding to routine media inquiries during the shutdown, but noted that "increased staffing shortages" have caused it to slow traffic into some airports.
