Huntsville International Airport is starting work on a new, 1,400-plus-space expansion to its parking deck.
Why it matters: New parking will make it easier for travelers at HSV to get to their gates, but it will mean changes in where they'll access parking during construction.
Catch up quick: The $57 million project by contractor Robins & Morton will bring the total parking deck capacity at HSV to around 3,800.
- The Port of Huntsville Board of Directors approved $40 million in airport revenue bonds to fund the work Tuesday morning, with the remainder coming from the airport's capital funds.
- "It's a big thing we've been needing to work on," said HSV CEO Butch Roberts at the meeting.
Zoom in: Two years of construction are set to start by the end of the year, per the airport, and will bring some changes to how drivers enter the parking area, Jim Flowers, HSV's chief design and construction officer, tells Axios Huntsville.
- Construction will start with a new entry plaza, Flowers says, where all parking traffic will shift once the existing one is closed for construction.
- On completion, one entry plaza will service the expanded parking deck and the other surface parking.
- Once completed, the expansion will increase the total parking spaces at the airport to more than 5,400, as HSV continues breaking passenger records for two consecutive years.
