Huntsville International Airport is back in the running for a fan-vote recognition as the country's best small airport.
Why it matters: The recognition, USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice Award Best Small Airport, would join a lineup of recent accolades highlighting the airport's work to keep upgrading as Huntsville gets busier.
- The airport was voted the #1 Best Small Airport by Newsweek Readers' Choice earlier this year, and won the USA Today honor back in 2020.
How it works: Folks can vote once per day through 10:59pm Oct. 6 at this link.
Driving the news: Interstellar Pizza is now open at the airport, beside the new Starbucks, as part of a plan that's going to vastly expand its dining options.
- The locally-owned pizza spot is among several new offerings coming to the airport through an agreement with Tailwind Concessions.
Catch up quick: Wilmington, N.C.-based Tailwind is now more than a year into its operation of retail, food and beverage options at the airport.
- A representative said in a recent release that the focus is still on local connections like beer from InnerSpace Brewing and products from Holtz Leather and 1818 Farms.
🍕 Grabbing a pre-flight bite

💭 Derek's thought bubble: I fly out of HSV a handful of times a year, and it's a refreshing change to grab a seat at the bar for a pizza and Coke while I wait to board.
- I had The Red Comet, with pepperoni, cherry peppers, red onion, hot honey and a sprinkle of salt. A-plus.
- They've got eight signature pizzas on the menu, in either 10- or 16-inch sizes. I got the 10 (and almost finished all of it).
What's next: The former cafe space at the airport has been walled in as it closes for an overhaul, the airport says, to revamp the existing restaurant and bar with a new short-order grill and Everbowl superfood and smoothie kiosk.
