Huntsville's WAAY is among 10 stations being sold by Byron Allen's Allen Media Group to Gray Media, the company announced Friday.
Why it matters: The $171-million sale will allow Gray to "preserve and deepen public service to their communities with expanded local news, local weather, and local sports programming," the statement says.
Other stations that are part of the deal include WCOV in Montgomery, WTVA in Columbus-Tupelo, Mississippi and KADN in Lafayette, Louisiana.
Gray Media currently owns five Alabama stations: WAFF in Huntsville, WBRC in Birmingham, WSFA in Montgomery, WTVY in Dothan, and WALA in Mobile.
The bottom line: Gray anticipates the transaction to close in the fourth quarter of the year pending regulatory approval from FCC and other customary closing conditions.
