Huntsville's first toehold in Marshall County may come tonight, as the City Council weighs annexing roughly 1,014 acres south of the Tennessee River.
Why it matters: The annexation continues the city's trend of growth, this time with a focus on industrial development.
On the agenda is a petition from Wiz Kidz LLC and Hollingshead Materials LLC to annex the portion of riverside property along McCutcheon Loop Road in Morgan County, with a smaller portion extending along Vaughn Road into Marshall County.
Hollingshead operates Smyrna Ready Mix Concrete, which has a quarry on the site.
Context:The city notes the petition isn't requesting the extension of any city service to the site, and cites Urban and Economic Development Director Shane Davis saying the move would help protect river frontage in Morgan County and provide city oversight in adjacent residential areas as well as the quarry.
The annexation will expand the city's reach on the southern side of the river, where the city first annexed land in Morgan County in 2018.
Zoom in: Huntsville's Zoning Committee on Wednesday recommended a public hearing for July 22. That's when the Planning Commission is expected to set initial zoning for the site to Industrial Park District and Residence 1, if the annexation gets approved.
