Hollywood opens new $83 million police headquarters

The Hollywood Police Department's new headquarters is officially open for business.
Why it matters: The modern, 100,000-square-foot glass facility can withstand a Category 5 storm, unlike the old headquarters, which was built in 1974.
Driving the news: The city held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday to welcome the community to the $83 million headquarters.
What's inside: The state-of-the-art facility features a 50-yard firing range, a defense tactics room, a fitness center, a community room and an advanced, real-time intelligence center.
- Before entering the building, visitors pass a memorial to honor the department's eight fallen officers.
- The roll call room is named after Officer Yandy Chirino, who was killed while searching for a suspected burglar in 2021.
- There's also a new radio tower outside the facility to support emergency communications.

Catch up quick: In 2019, Hollywood voters approved a $165 million general obligation bond, a portion of which would fund the new police headquarters.
