Border Patrol detained Uber driver during cinnamon roll delivery

The latest: A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson tells Axios that Ivan Dario Rico Molano was detained during a traffic stop on I-95 near Sheridan Street at 8:50am after admitting he didn't have legal authorization to be in the U.S.

• Molano, who legally entered the U.S. from Colombia in 2021, "remained beyond his authorized period of stay," the spokesperson adds.
• During the encounter, he was able to call someone to take his car with the cinnamon rolls and storage containers.
• He was arrested and transported to the Dania Beach Border Patrol Station for processing.

Meanwhile, Roll & Dough owner Julie Pierre thought the rolls were stolen because the driver didn't deliver the rolls when he was supposed to and didn't respond to messages for nearly five hours.

• "He delivered something at 1:16[pm], but the thing is it quite literally said it was failed," she said in the now-deleted TikTok.
• She later filed a police report with Sunrise Police, who recovered the cinnamon rolls and storage containers on Thursday.

• Uber has not responded to Axios' request for comment following news of Molano's detention.

What they're saying: "Based on what we now know, Ivan did not intentionally steal our cinnamon rolls," Roll & Dough posted on Instagram on Thursday. "We are sincerely sorry that we described the situation that way before learning the complete circumstances."

• The bakery says it hopes to connect with Molano's family to donate a portion of the money raised through its GoFundMe.
• "We are deeply sorry for what Ivan and his loved ones are currently experiencing," the statement continued.
