Blanche Ely students test cooking skills with new food truck

The big picture: The Pompano Beach high school is the first in Florida to receive a $200,000 fully equipped food truck through the Intuit Food Truck Program.

• It's the 12th high school in the country to receive a truck from Intuit, which aims to get students financially literate and career-ready.

Between the lines: Students in the school's culinary arts program will develop the menu, cook and sell food at Blanche Ely sporting events and other events in Pompano Beach.

• They are responsible for handling the finances, budgeting, bookkeeping and managing resources.
• The revenue generated will go back into the food truck program.

What they're saying: "It's an amazing opportunity for our students to learn about entrepreneurship, culinary art skills, all the soft skills needed to run your own business too," Broward Schools Superintendent Howard Hepburn said.

• "They will get continuous support on how to make this business flourish."
• Hepburn added, "There are two things that make me excited: opportunities for our students and food."

Dig in: Chef Rory Brown, culinary arts teacher at Blanche Ely, said the menu will be "some basic stuff with a twist."

• "It's going to be very interesting," he added. "The kids are going to have input."
• Kara, a 12th grade student in the culinary arts program, said she has discovered a love for food and cooking.

😋 Naomi's thought bubble: I'm ready to dig in as soon as the truck is out and about. Stay tuned.
