Boebert's son faces child exploitation charges

U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert's 21-year-old son was arrested over the weekend on felony charges related to the alleged sexual exploitation of a child, according to the Garfield County Sheriff's Office.
Catch up quick: Tyler Boebert faces three felony charges of sexual exploitation of a child, including one alleging intent to "deal in, sell or distribute … any sexually exploitative material" and another involving videotaped material, according to court records.
- He also faces two felony counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Driving the news: The sheriff's office says Boebert was arrested Aug. 9 in Garfield County and released the same day after posting a $10,000 bond.
- The arrest followed a sheriff's office investigation and what the agency described as a "felony review process" by the 9th Judicial District Attorney's Office.
Zoom in: A 49-page arrest affidavit filed last week details an investigation that began in 2024 after a Safe2Tell report about sexually explicit videos involving minors posted to an Instagram account.
The affidavit says one sexually explicit video, recorded Jan. 21, 2024, depicts Tyler Boebert and a 17-year-old girl. Boebert was 18 at the time, according to the affidavit.
- Boebert told police he was the man in the video but denied recording it, saying it was made without his knowledge.
- Yes, but: The girl told investigators that Boebert made the video with her and set it to her phone, per the affidavit.
Context: The affidavit describes an investigation into sexually explicit material allegedly circulated through social media accounts involving multiple people.
- Investigators say they identified an Instagram group chat with roughly 124 users that appeared to help spread one of those accounts.
What they're saying: "I love my son," Lauren Boebert said in a statement to Axios. "We take these allegations very seriously and pray for everyone affected during this challenging time."
Boebert is seeking reelection in Colorado's 4th Congressional District, which includes Douglas County.
What we're watching: Tyler Boebert is scheduled for sentencing hearings next month in two separate cases, one in Weld County and another in Garfield County.
