Colorado Springs increases illegal fireworks patrols

Driving the news: Expect to see more police and firefighters on patrol this Fourth of July weekend as the city ups the enforcement of its fireworks ban.

Flashback: Last year, an illegal firework hit a neighbor's house and started a fire that destroyed the home.

What they're saying: "No celebration is worth the possibility of families losing everything they have worked so hard to build," Mayor Mobolade told local media this week.

• "One of the most patriotic things that we can do this Independence Day is to protect this place we call home."

The big picture: The city's burn ban targets outdoor fires for cooking and recreation, as well as smoking in city parks and open spaces.

• The city is issuing permits for bonfires, model rockets, welding and blasting.
