See the dawn of America's 250th birthday atop Pikes Peak

Pikes Peak is offering visitors the unique opportunity to see the dawn of our nation's 250th birthday from atop America's Mountain.

What to expect: The Pikes Peak Highway will open before dawn July 4 to allow visitors to reach the 14,115-foot summit in time to see the sunrise.

The highway will also remain open into the evening, so visitors can drive or take a shuttle to the top to see the sunset over the Front Range.

The intrigue: Don't want to drive? The cog railway is adding special departures before daybreak.

If you go: Tickets are required for both experiences and officials expect them to sell quickly.

What's next: The cog railway will also offer sunrise trains July 18, Aug. 1 (Colorado's 150th birthday) and Sept. 26.
